The goal with this project is to look at what effects the quality on a drilled hole. In the aerospace industry today a lot of the holes in the aircrafts are made with a handheld drill and due to tight tolerances on the holes it is important to understand the drilling process. During the drilling process there are a lot of things that can affect the quality of the hole. The drill is sometimes guided with an accessory, the drilling is made in different materials, there is an operator holding the tool, the tolerances of the tool and the state of the drill, and so on, might affect the quality of the hole. With this project we want to learn how different parameters affect the quality of the hole and what could be done to minimize these affects.

The second part of the project is to investigate a different way to handle the “floor stock material”. Atlas Copco have a suggestion of another process that needs to be further investigated in detail.

Finally, we would like to have the current process compared to the suggested process.

Extra:
If the results show that it is beneficial for Atlas Copco to change the process, and there is time left - the thesis student will be highly involved in the implementation of the new process.
